Even when it’s something you want and/or need, it’s extremely difficult. The truth is, no one will understand what you are going through unless they’ve been through it themselves, and none of us wish that for those we care about. Please know it’s a tough journey, though you may be partly or mostly through it, there will be days a year, 2 years, 3 years + out when you will have anger and sadness and think “why do I still feel like this.” Hugs to both of you.
